God Will Keep Me Safe
(Psalm 91)
About the Song:
Something about the vibration of a treadmill takes my mind places it wouldn't normally go. One evening, several years ago, I was running on one when a pretty bad storm hit. I had remembered some kiddos from church telling me how nervous storms made them sometimes. So, while still jogging on the treadmill, I picked up my phone and texted their mom:
"Hey, that storm's pretty scary. The kids okay?"
"Actually, we're out of the house tonight. I need to call and check on them."
I was worried about my little friends, being nervous about storms and not being with Mom and Dad. So, I went outside, and, the best way I know how, rebuked the storm. With probably awkward language, I spoke in as much authority as I know how to and told that storm to take it easy! When I was done, I looked over my shoulder, and there was a man I didn't know on his way to his car who had stopped in his tracks to stare at a sweaty guy in gym shorts talking to the sky.
That evening, I wrote the chorus to "God Will Keep Me Safe."
Some short time later, that same family went through a bit of a trying time. The kids' grandmother was suffering from kidney failure and needed a transplant. She found a donor in her son-in-law, the kids' dad. As the time for the operations drew nearer, I dove in to recording a version of this song for the family to have, so that they could keep singing Psalm 91 over their pretty scary situation.
Do I believe that if you know God, absolutely nothing bad ever happens to you? Not at all. Do I believe that if you know God, there is absolutely always hope in every situation, no matter how terrifying? Yes!
Psalm 91 is about having a strength and refuge that you do not have to provide for yourself. It is about how people who know God are never alone, and they are always accompanied by a God who is always in control and is never caught off guard. We put our hope in that protection, and if we are ever going to raise a generation of influential Christian children, they need to put their hope in that protection as well!
The world can be a scary place! Bad things can happen to anyone. People who don't know God are at the mercy of chance when it comes to bad things happening. But people who know God can REST in His shelter, knowing that He is always with them. This is a great seed to plant in your children's lives when they struggle with worry, fear, anxiety, and uncertainty.
Lyrics:
None will ever be as powerful as He is,
the God who loves and watches over me
I'm in no danger here, 'cause He is always near to me
and He is in control of everything
I am not alone, because I know that
God will keep me safe, morning noon and night
Because I call Him God, my Father, I never leave His sight!
God will keep me safe, I know that much is true
He rescues me and He protects me, there's nothing He can't do!
He always knows what's best, and He never needs to rest
'Cause He's stronger than the strongest of the strong
He holds me in His arms and keeps me away from harm
And where He is is where I want to be
I am not alone, because I know that
God will keep me safe, morning noon and night
Because I call Him God, my Father, I never leave His sight!
God will keep me safe, I know that much is true
He rescues me and He protects me, there's nothing He can't do!
He will turn the darkest night into a sunny day
He makes straigth the pathways that I walk and He wipes my tears away
And I know now that
God will keep me safe, morning noon and night
Because I call Him God, my Father, I never leave His sight!
God will keep me safe, I know that much is true
He rescues me and He protects me, there's nothing He can't do!
