Guard My Heart
Philippians 4:6-7, Proverbs 4:23
About the Song
For the record - this song is what I wanted the whole album to sound like!
I go over and over it all the time - I have unspeakable respect for Christian families who do the best they can to bring up kids in a Biblical way. It really - REALLY - is the Lord's work. Your kids are the people who are going to share the Good News with the next generation. They are the people who are going to carry the message of Hope into the future. If they are going to do it well, they must have guarded hearts.
Proverbs 4 says that above all else - as if to say that there is nothing more important - guard your heart. It even tells us why. According to this scripture, whatever your heart is full of will dictate what you do and say. Notice - it doesn't say what you do and say determines what your heart is like. On the contrary - if your heart is full of vengeance, spite, anger, fear, deception, or any other evil, your words and actions will be at the mercy of those things. Likewise, if your heart is full of hope, compassion, and obedience to God, what you say and do will reflect that. It's sort of like "garbage in, garbage out," but with a fuller picture of the urgency.
Philippians chapter 4 says that the enemy of a guarded heart is anxiety. When we distrust in the Lord's sovereignty and goodness, our hearts become vulnerable.
This song, lyrically, addresses all of the most common heart vulnerabilities I encountered during my time at a Christian school. These are the places where I most often saw or heard about misplaced trust, a lack of understanding, or something else that, scripturally speaking, could result in an unguarded heart. Philippians 4 goes on to say that the way to keep your heart guarded is to go to God with prayer and petition for everything. Therefore, naturally, I wanted to write a song that literally is a prayer that asks God to guard our hearts in those specific areas that are vulnerable!
Lyrics
Everything I say and everything I do
should glorify Your name and should honor You
So I want to know Your truth and I want to hold it tight
'cause what I say and do comes from deep inside
Guard my heart down to the deepest part
'cause I want to do what's right and stay here at Your side
You are faithful Lord, and I know You'll always be
so I will seek You first, instead of earthly things
Lord, let me hear Your voice louder than my own
'cause I want to know You more and I want to make You known
Guard my heart down to the deepest part
'cause I want to do what's right and stay here at Your side
Give me a heart that loves, and a heart that prays
that knows when to make a move and knows when it's time to wait
Give me a heart that hears and a heart that sees
A heart that appreciates all that You do for me
Oh, give me a heart that serves, a heart that will persevere
A heart that puts others first and trusts that You're always near
Guard my heart down to the deepest part
'cause I want to do what's right and stay here at Your side
